Basilicata Wines

This region is bordering with Apulia in north and eestern side, Campania is in the western side and Calabria in the south. In its southern side, the region of Basilicata is located being surrounded by Tyrrhenian Sea. Due to the nearness to several different climate affected regions the average climate of this place is slightly unpredictable although mostly influenced by mountain and dry and warm in the coastline of Ionian coast. The soil of this area is very fertile, geologically said as volcanic soil, rich in mineral proportion.

Different types of grapes are harvested here. The red variety comprises of brands like Barbera, Canosina, Aglianico, Malvasi Nera, Sangiovese, Uva di Troia, and Montepulciano. The white variety comprises of Fiano, Moscato, Santa Sofia, Malvasia, Bambino Bianco etc.

The region of Basilicata is located in a rocky area and as it locates in the southern part of Italy it is ranged by the southern portion of the Apepenines mountain range. As the Lucanian Appenines portion that is the growing lower range of this mountain range is divided by the lake Vallo di Diano this place is well known with earthquake and floods from the rivers.

Minly red wines are produced from this region and mostly it is the cultivation of Aglianico grape is found here. Only DOC category of wine is produced here and the most famous brand of this place is Aglianico del Vulture: it is harvested in the sloe of Mount Vulture hence it is named in that way. It is made from the grape variety of Aglianico grape. Another popular brand of wine is Vallo di Diano, the specialty of this wine is long term aging. Minimum two to five years aging is required to produce this kind of wine.
