Italian Wine Label Rules

There are generally two parts of an Italian wine label that is worthy of attention of the consumers. These include the producer or winery name in the one side of the label and the name of the wine producing province should have a mention on the other side of the label. Before you buy a bottle you should have a look on it.

By law, all Italian wine labels must have the name of the winery. It can be written in small letters on the backside   or in large, bold letters on the front side of the label. Great winemakers can make good wines even from bad vintages but it is never to go rigidly for the producer’s name to buy a product, and here comes the utility of experience.

The Italian wine label should also include a production related geographic origin. This is where the skill is required. A person can see one of four indicators on the label of Italian wine, which is in descending order of “importance”, can inform the consumer something related to the quality of the wine. Vino Da Tavola, DOC, DOC-DOCG, IGT- these indicators will be mentioned on the label by the mention of a geographic location that can represent a large area as a region itself or a small area as a small vineyard.

Theoretically, an indication of DOC-DOCG, implies the fact that an Italian wine of the best quality, followed by DOC of minutely lesser quality than DOC-DOCG. Then the IGT designation is mentioned to indicate a lesser quality than DOC. Finally, a wine labeled as Vino Da Tavola, that is the indication of a very base kind of wine, may be of non-vintage quality. Unfortunately, when it refers to the Italian wine these legal terms hardly indicate anything about the quality. That is why it is recommended to learn the best producers’ names. Many of finest Italian wines are labeled as IGT that means a general quality.
